John Battista has been involved in the Construction Industry for over 35 years including 10 years in the trades, 10 years as a construction superintendent / project manager, and 15 years as a Building Inspector. He became interested in disabled accessibility issues at an early age as he grew up with his father in a wheelchair. He has seen firsthand what it is like for a disabled person not to have equal access to goods and services.
Mr. Battista holds and maintains over 30 Professional Licenses including State School & Hospital Inspector, Fire Inspector, General B Building Contractor, Accessibility Inspector / Plans Examiner, and State Certified Access Specialist. Mr. Battista has served as an Expert Witness, Construction Forensic Investigator, and a Construction Consultant on various cases & projects throughout Southern California.
He has consulted with various public municipalities including Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), Ventura Unified School District (VUSD), Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), Los Angeles Department of Building & Safety (LADBS), and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works (LACDPW) providing Accessibility and Building Inspections on Schools, Colleges, Medical Facilities, and Essential Service Buildings over the last 15 years.
Mr. Battista focused on the accessibility aspects of his projects and closed out several high profile projects for Los Angeles Unified School District & the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works with zero accessibility issues. The Directors of these Public Municipalities took notice and Mr. Battista became sought after to resolve accessibility issues. Currently Mr. Battista is consulting with The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works Architectural & Engineering Division inspecting their Capital Projects at various stages of construction as their ADA Expert pointing out potential access problems and providing solutions while construction is in progress avoiding costly delays at final.
Mr. Battista’s unique qualifications as a licensed building contractor, construction project manager, and building inspector gives him an understanding of construction from all sides of the fence. These real life experiences along with Mr. Battista’s strong construction background allow him to understand not only accessibility issues but how to remedy them in the most cost-effective manner.
The Company: ADA Compliance Masters
John Battista founded ADA Compliance Masters in 2014 after his original company, Cobra Structural Inspections, had been operating for 14 years. Cobra Structural Inspections began as a Specialized Inspection company providing Deputy Inspector’s for various structural disciplines such as concrete, masonry, and structural steel. Within 1 year of opening, Cobra, moved into the School & Hospital arena providing Inspectors who would not only inspect the structural aspects of the construction, but all trades including access compliance for the disabled. Mr. Battista saw the need for Specialized Accessibility Inspectors after witnessing hundreds of thousands of dollars being spent on construction related accessibility mistakes & violations. He saw new multi-million dollar construction projects completed only to find that a certificate of occupancy could not be issued because of non-compliant restrooms or ramps and witnessed the expensive rework to make the buildings compliant.
Because of the amount of Accessibility work that Cobra Structural Inspections was doing, Mr. Battista saw the need to open a company which focused entirely on Disabled Access and Accessibility Laws. That company is ADA Compliance Masters.
ADA Compliance Masters had its start in the public sector but quickly moved into the private sector as well after receiving hundreds of calls from small business owners who were being sued for access related violations. The company works with these small businesses and their attorneys providing accessibility solutions for compliance and defense strategies to resolve litigation. ADA Compliance Masters has completed hundreds of accessibility surveys, pre-purchase / pre-lease inspections, plan review, and consulting for disabled access compliance.
